Make sure you get a good starting image! I had my wife quickly take a photo of me looking serious. But here is the steps I took to create my image.ġ- The first step I took is very important. My photoshop skills are a bit rusty because I have been spending most of my time taking and editing photographs. I decided to attempt a recreation myself. My favorite is Sansa, don’t know why but I used Tyrion as a model for creating my own.

Here is a look at the current poster of Tyrion. I decided right away that I wanted to recreate it and so I did. I love the simplicity and power of the main character’s faces up close and the blue color. This year the poster appealed to me again. I think I finally gave up and used a version of the font online to create this. It took forever to get the lettering and I had to play with the bevel and emboss for a long time. In the past I followed a tutorial and made my own game of thrones poster art based on the year’s poster and I think it came out OK. I like this better because if you want you don’t have to wait a whole week, or months between seasons to get onto the next episode if the cliffhanger is too much to bear. It probably took me until season three of GOT to actually start watching. Add into that, the fact that I am addicted to reality shows, do-it-yourself shows, survival shows, and many sports. My DVR is loaded and I feel like I am always trying to play catch up. I watch too many shows and at times it gets overwhelming trying to keep up. I heard a lot of the hoopla, but wasn’t sure if I really wanted to commit. Luckily, all of the 3D artists on the team were incredibly talented and familiar with the look we wanted to achieve.So I probably was a bit late to the party for game of thrones. Kirk and I had to constantly keep the work in check to make sure we weren’t straying from the language that we’d already established.

We couldn’t stray too far from the previous look, but we wanted to take it to a new level and improve every individual aspect of it. We decided that the lighting would also have to be cooled down quite a bit this season since winter has started to overtake the continent of Westeros in the show. Sticking to realistic wood tones was key for us, as was sticking to realistic edgewear/damage. This included Kirk and I going to an exotic wood shop and taking as many reference photos as we could of real woods. In this final season, we really wanted to bring as much realism as possible to the textures, materials, and lighting using everything we’ve learned in the past nine and a half years. Ian: I’ve been working on this since the very first season! We had to keep the same art style and world-look for the first 7 seasons, but this 8th season gave us the opportunity to improve everything, as we were literally starting from scratch.
